How to Control Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity affects children ages six through eleven and is marked by an over 32% body fat percentage in girls and an over 25% body fat percentage in boys. There are many different causes of obesity in children – ranging from medical catalysts and genetic predisposition to poor lifestyle choices.

Child obesity is an ordinary extraordinary case. While it may seem that there are so many obese children out there, people still think that being obese is a disorder. Children as early as two to five years old are already experiencing obesity which is very dangerous to their health.

The prevalence of child obesity is more than a food issue, because this becomes a vital life issue. The lifestyle, emotions and family dilemmas play a big role. A cohesive effort from every member of the family is needed in dealing with an overweight child.

Causes Of Child Obesity
Children’s eating habits become established at an early age by parental influence or guidance, (even through lack of it). It can be much easier and quicker for the busy parent to order a take-away rather than prepare a meal of healthy food at home.

Lack of Exercise : Lack of regular exercise is a factor that has contributed to this being one of the causes of childhood obesity. Children who spend a lot of time watching TV programs will have a greater risk of child obesity than those who go outside playing or sporting.

Genetics: Genetics and DNA have been found to be a contributing factor in the causes of childhood obesity. Unfortunately, some children are naturally predisposed to obesity.

Treatment Options
Healthy Eating
Nutritional diet makes your child healthy not fatty. Be supportive to him to make them take care of their diet and physical activities.

Keep a close watch on your children’s diet
Provide them with foods recommended in the food pyramid. Avoid empty calories - sweets, sodas, fried foods, foods with thick gravy, etc. Encourage them to opt for steamed, boiled or grilled foods instead.

Less Overeating
Avoid high calories food and low nutritional food for your children.

Participate in Physical Activities
Encourage your children to participate in physical activities rather than engaging themselves in entertaining activities that result in overweight condition in childhood which may also follow during adulthood.

Focus on your child’s health and positive qualities, not your child’s weight.
Try not to make him feel different. Let him know he is loved and appreciated whatever his weight. Overweight children are probably more aware than anyone else that has a weight problem.

Health Education
As with children and most things in life, they’re ignorant of the how and why of things like obesity. By educating your child about healthy eating habits and how bad eating habits can harm their body, you’re helping to stop one of the biggest causes of obesity—ignorance.

Make mealtime a family event, a time to share news and tell stories.
Do not allow eating in front of the television or computer that creates mindless munching. Do not run after toddlers and children forcing food into their mouths.

Preventative measures are important!
As preventive measures, education for the child should include proper nutrition, selection of low-fat snacks, healthy exercise habits, and monitoring of television viewing. In addition, parent education may focus on building self-esteem and address psychological problems.
