Get Your Family Going!

Involving the whole family in physical activities teaches children that being active
is fun – and feels good the next day too. For busy parents, active events combine
exercise with family time for a true win-win experience. You don’t need fancy
equipment or extensive travel. You just need a plan and a desire to raise a healthy
family focused on a lifetime of movement.

How to get started
•   Make a list of activities you’d like to do together. Get input from every
    member of the family.
•   Include activities everyone can do at some level and enjoy.
•   Use a calendar to plan one or two family activities a week.
•   Plan something special once a month that’s out of the ordinary, like an
overnight camping trip or a day hike to a local lake for a swim.
•   Include smaller children by using a backpack, stroller, or bike trailer.
•   Don’t put it off.

Activity Ideas

OUTDOORS
•   Ride bikes together.
•   Teach your children games like hopscotch, tag, jump rope, and hide-and-seek
    – and join right in!
•   Encourage your kids to join sports teams like skiing, skating, swimming, tennis
and golf. Then volunteer as a coach or practice with them often as a family.
•   Play basketball in the driveway or at a park.
•   Play miniature golf or Frisbee golf.
•   Fly kites.
•   Combine a love of the environment with physical activity by picking up trash at
a local park. Be sure everyone wears gloves.
    Indoors
•   Plan a weekly family sock-hop. Allow each person in the family to choose a
song to dance to each week.
•   Learn a few folk dances together and perfect each one.
•   Hula hoop at home.
•   Walk laps at the mall.
