Bocce: Family Fun from Italy

Add a new ball game to your list and play it anywhere there is open space.

Bocce (bah-chee) is similar to bowling and is played using nine balls. One is small (pallino) and the remaining eight are large (point balls or boccia). You can buy a set for under $30 or make your own out of wood blocks. You can make the boccia smaller to make playing easier for smaller hands as long as all boccia are the same size.

• 8 blocks of wood 5” x 5” x 5”
• 1 block of wood 2” x 2” x 2”
• ½ pint each of green, red, blue, orange, and bright yellow paint
• Sander and sandpaper
• Jigsaw and lathe

• Form a round shape out of the blocks
• 8 large balls 107 mm (4.2 inches)  known as boccia
• 1 small ball 40mm (1.6 inches) known as pallino
• Sand all balls until smooth to touch
• Paint boccia and pallino
• Paint 2 large balls in each of the 4 colors of green, red, blue and orange
• Paint small ball yellow

• Use a pillow case as a bag
• Keep the old t-shirt in the bag to wipe off the balls

Play the game
Find any field or open area to play in, flat or sloped, on dirt, grass, sand or pavement. Choose a reasonable amount of space to play in and generally keep the field to 60 – 100 feet long by 12 feet wide.

Open Bocce for 4 players
Aim of the game
• Get your bocce balls as close as possible to the pallino
• Players may use their balls to knock the other player’s balls away from the
pallino, or to knock the pallino closer to their ball

Start the play
• Divide the bocce balls evenly between 4 players
• Each person gets 2 baccia of the same color
• At random, choose a player to throw the pallino within the field of play
• The same player throws his first bocce ball
• After the first player has thrown his first bocce ball, he is considered “inside”
because his ball is closer to the pallino than any of the competitors’ balls
• The next player throws his first ball
• If he is closer to the pallino than the first player he is now “inside” and
  forfeits his next turn
• All “outside” players take turns throwing their bocce balls
• Each player that gets closer to the pallino than the current “inside” player
  gives up his second throw

• After all players have thrown their bocce balls, the player that is “inside” receives
a point for every one of his balls that are closer to the pallino than his closest
  competitor’s ball
• After the points are awarded, the frame is considered complete
• Start a new frame by electing a new person to throw the pallino and to
  throw the first bocce ball
• A game is won when a player reaches 13 points
• Play as many frames as necessary until one player reaches this point level

• Decrease or increase points to win depending on time constraints between players
• Play team-style bocce
• Organize 2 teams with 4 people on a team
• Each team gets four balls, divided equally among the players
• Continue the play like in open bocce
• The team with the closest ball gets one point for each of its balls that are closer
to the pallino than the other team’s closest ball
• If the two teams’ closest balls are an equal distance from the pallino, no points
  are awarded
• Play as many frames as needed until one team has a total score of 16 points
