Build an Activity Chest

You don't need a home gym to keep your family active. Just keep a few items in a designated box, chest, shelf closet or car trunk and you’ll all have instant incentive to get outside and get moving!

  • A basketball
  • A soccer ball
  • An inflatable beach ball
  • A football
  • A can of tennis balls
  • A jump rope
  • A hula hoop
  • Two softball gloves and a softball

The strategies
If you pick up the kids from school or from after school activities regularly, stop at a park before you get home at least two days a week.
  • Treat the outing as a reward and set a time limit of 30 minutes for the play time.
  • Getting active before you get home means “chores” won’t get in the way.

Place equipment in a few activity stations in your yard or at a park and encourage the family to do a circuit of activities.
  • Use a stop watch to move from station to station.
  • Have stations interact – like tossing a ball back and forth between two stations.
  • Mix in non-equipment activities like jumping jacks, push-ups and running.

Go back to school (the playground that is) on weeknights or weekends.
  • Bring the basketball and shoot some hoops.
  • Skip rope around the perimeter of the playground.
  • Challenge each other to hula hooping!
