Kids Run Wild
The world’s largest children’s running event is coming to your doorstep on May 17th, as bases around the world hold the Armed Forces America Kids Run. Are you ready and set to go?
Now in its 12th year, the America’s Armed Forces Kids Run offers 21,875 military dependent children an opportunity to train and run their best in a fun, kid-focused event. This year, 178 Navy and Air Forces Bases, plus Army Forts and Garrisons worldwide, will hold the run on Saturday May 17th.
The America’s Kids Run began in 1986 as the Junior Bloomsday race in Spokane, Washington. That first run attracted 3,800 children. In 2002, race organizers changed the name and expanded it to military dependents at bases around the world. Over the past 25 years 198,000 children ages 5 to 13 have enjoyed the run.
Running is a great fitness habit to develop at a young age. You don’t need special equipment, except for footwear, and it’s a self-paced aerobic workout you can do almost anywhere.
Run Your Own Race
The America’s Kids Run event offers participants three distances based on their ages: Ages 5 and 6 run ½ mile; ages 7 and 8 run one mile; kids age 9 through 13 run two miles. All courses are pre-planned to be secure and safe.
Teens and adults can get involved too. There’s always a need for volunteers to handle all the details of a large event like this, so contact your Youth or Fitness Center for volunteer opportunities.
Better yet – run. Many bases are holding America’s Adult 5k runs in conjunction with the kids run. Check the registration information for your location online at www.americaskidsrun.org and get ready, set and go!
