Win in Life with Olympic Values
This month, Air Force Youth Programs on bases around the world will present Olympic Day activities. Fun sporting events, guest speakers and other activities will encourage all young Americans to celebrate the values woven into the Olympics: Fair play, perseverance, respect and sportsmanship.
The first Olympic Day was celebrated on June 23, 1948, and it has become an annual event ever since. Now Olympic Day activities take place in hundreds of locations around the world. The day honors the founding of the International Olympic Committee on June 23, 1894, when the “modern Olympics” began.
Over the last 20 years, Olympic Day Runs dominated the celebration as a way of promoting the practice of mass sports. Recently however, Olympic Day has become a broader and more inclusive event that highlights the three pillars of the International Olympic Committee: Move, Learn and Discover.
Move: Join sports and activities that welcome everyone, regardless of age, gender or physical ability.
Learn: Ask if your base will have a special presentation or exhibition from top Olympians and Paralympians.
Discover: Cultural activities and neighborhood exploration can be woven into the event day activities too.
Visit your Youth Programs office to find out more about the activities planned for Olympic Day on your base. Discover how the Olympic spirit of mutual understanding, friendship, solidarity and fair play can build a peaceful and better world.
