2014 Military Youth of the Year Named
Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) named Natalia Lynch, a member of the USAG Wiesbaden Youth Center, Germany, the 2014 Military Youth of the Year and she will serve as an advocate for military teens across the country and abroad. The Military Youth of the Year competition is an annual event, which starts at the installation level and culminates in the recognition of one teen who serves as a representative for military teens across the globe. Throughout the Military Youth of the Year process teens demonstrate how they achieve academic success, make outstanding contributions to their family, school, community and military Youth Program, and overcome personal obstacles through a written package, personal interviews and speeches. After receiving the Youth of the Year honor at the installation level, the candidates then face serious competition at the state and regional level before being selected to move on to the national celebration. Throughout the Military Youth of the Year competition, the teens earn a minimum $1,000 scholarship for winning their state competition, $10,000 scholarship for earning the regional title, and $20,000 scholarship for being named the Military Youth of the Year at the national event.
Overall AF Youth Programs had 25 state winners who advanced to the six regional competitions. AF Youth Programs teens captured three of the six regional titles: Elizabeth Hubbard, Travis AFB Youth Programs; Kilana Jenkins, Joint Base Andrews Youth Programs; and Brendan Kennedy, Robins AFB Youth Programs proudly represented the AF at the final event in Arlington, VA. They all spoke very eloquently of the impact AF Youth Programs and the BGCA partnership has had on molding them into resilient teens who aspire to make a positive contribution to their community and do their part to support the AF mission. In September, Natalia will join five other finalists from non-military clubs to vie for the National Youth of the Year honor and additional scholarships. Military Youth of the Year is a component of BGCA's National Youth of the Year recognition program and is offered through the long-standing partnership between BGCA and Air Force Child and Youth Programs.
