Youth Employment Skills (YES) Offers Valuable Experiences for Youth
The Youth Employment Skills (YES) program is an on-base volunteer initiative that helps high school students gain valuable work skills, "bank" dollars toward their post-secondary education/training, and make a positive impact in the military community. The Air Force Aid Society (AFAS), in a joint effort with Air Force Child and Youth Programs (CYP), sponsors the YES program that makes it possible for high school students to earn $4 for every hour volunteered in an on-base function. Students can accumulate up to 250 hours over 4 years of high school for a maximum award of $1,000 toward their higher education, vocational-technical and academic endeavors. In addition, AF installations are credited $2 for every volunteer hour to help support base initiatives and the YES program (up to $10,000 per year). Military teens have gained indispensable work experience through a variety of volunteer opportunities in hospitals, child development centers, veterinary clinics, auto shops and public affair offices that meet the varied interests and career paths of the students. Currently, the three AF sites with the highest student participation include: Spangdahlem AB, Moody AFB and Langley AFB. Air Force Child and Youth Programs is proud of the long standing partnership with Air Force Aid Society and the Youth Employment Skills initiative to support military teens.
