1. $0-$20 Look for DVDs and fitness books at libraries, swap meets, garage sales and from friends. Before you decide to buy, check out reviews or ask your friends about their favorites. Set up an exchange with friends and you’ll never get bored.
2. $0-$10 Make a jump rope or buy a fancy one with rotating handles. Kids love this activity for a reason, so channel your inner child and start skipping with joy.
3. $0-$20 Gliding discs are a fun way to add new exercises to your routine, and most discs come with instructions and exercise ideas. Paper plates work well as a free substitute for commercial discs – but be careful not to slip.
4. $10-$15 Resistance bands (or tubes) have more uses than most can imagine and are ideal for strength training every muscle in your body. Appropriate for beginners or advanced exercises, you can use them at home or on the road. Work on strengthening your legs, arms, and core with these simple stretchy bands.
5. $15-$20 Boost your motivation level with a pedometer. Set your goal for 10,000 steps per day, and try to increase the number over time. Buy two pedometers, and match your steps with a partner for a friendly competition.
6. $15-$20 Stability balls can be used to strengthen your core even while sitting at a computer. These exercise balls, also called physio or Swiss balls, are extremely versatile. Use them in your stretching or cardio routines, yoga, or full body strength training. Place them in a round laundry basket, turn up the music, and drum on them with your hands for a fun workout.
7. $0-$20 Personal trainers-in-training need students, and usually offer a discounted rate. Find out if your local gym or university offers such a program and give a budding personal trainer some valuable experience as you work out for less money.
8. $10-$25 Aerobics steps are expensive items when new (near $100), but many used ones are for sale for around $20. Use the DVDs you got from the library to create a workout, or use the steps as a bench to add inclines and declines to your moves.
9. $0-$25 Garage sales and Craigslist offer a chance get a great deal, meet local people, and maybe even hit it off with a new fitness buddy. Big items like bikes and treadmills, home gyms, and jump ropes can be had for practically free. Bring cash and look for the little used items in the corner.
10. $15-$25 Balance trainers range from balance boards to bubble-shaped discs. Smaller, inexpensive models are easy to move or store, but still can improve core strength and add intensity to your standard strength training moves.
