1.   Don’t smoke.

2.   Gargle with warm salt water. This reduces swelling and relieves discomfort. Use one teaspoon of salt dissolved in eight fluid ounces of warm water. Do this every hour.

3.    Honey. Warm tea sweetened with honey can help soothe your irritated throat and will also help to keep you hydrated.

4.   Hydrate. Drinking fluids can thin the secretions in your throat and soothe the irritation. Hot fluids, such as tea or soup, seem to work best. You can also use a room vaporizer or humidifier in your sleeping area.

5.   Over-the-counter solutions. Try nonprescription throat lozenges or sprays. A decongestant or steroid nasal spray can reduce mucus which can make a throat sore. Hard candy (sugar-free) may also help. Or, use an anti-inflammatory medicine, such as Advil or Aleve, to reduce inflammation and swelling in your throat.

6.   Shower. A steamy shower is a good alternative if you don’t have a humidifier or vaporizer. Take deep breaths.
