Walk This Way

A new old way of getting together with family and focusing on fitness is sweeping the nation: Walking! Even with busy family schedules, you can almost always find time to take a stroll around the neighborhood. Here’s a plan for making it happen.

Begin with quick review, so your maiden voyage is one that everyone in the family can complete. Add more distance gradually.

Encourage younger children to ride their bike and take along a wagon in case the littlest ones get tired.

Include everyone, even the dog. Canines need your family’s companionship and the exercise is good for them too!

Use pedometers so you and your family can increase the number of steps you take on each walk. Encourage your family to wear their pedometer all day, and keep a family log of total steps. Adults should work toward 10,000 steps a day; children 6 - 12 years old need more steps - 12,000 for girls and 15,000 for boys.

Go the distance
and register the whole family in a community family fun run/walk. If the event is for charity, use your family walking time to collect pledges from neighbors.
